I’m a professional photographer based in the Monterey Bay area along the central coast of California. My photographic experience covers a broad range from photo-journalism to scenic and nature photography, to weddings and portraiture, to commercial work and beyond. If I had a specialty, it would probably be street and travel photography. I enjoy the variety and the freedom of shooting colorful, interesting or unusual and unexpected elements that catch my interest and which, along with shots of the people and animals that accompany the architecture and natural beauty of wherever I am, I like to combine these elements to capture the overall feel and sense of a place or event. I enjoy the challenge in candid, unscripted photography, of capturing the fleeting moments, in freezing time for many generations to come. I particularly enjoy shooting for motion picture productions, theater, historical and cosplay settings where I can create images that feel like they come from a different time and place that people don’t see every day.
Much of my work over the past 40 years has been shooting classic weddings, prom and senior photos, and family and individual portraits. Even with these, I prefer to shoot on location rather than the studio, with natural morning or evening light, and to incorporate a more natural, casual, less posed or almost candid sort of setting. I believe that if people are comfortable and at ease, a bit more of my subject’s personality is likely to show through and those photos will convey a sense of the fun and joy we felt in making them.
I’ve spent countless hours in the darkroom crafting quality images from thousands of rolls of film. I felt nearly as much satisfaction in the creative printing process as I did in the capturing of the image. I began using digital cameras in 2000 and now feel I have been able to expand the possibilities of my art tremendously as I perfect my creative skills with Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom. The quality of the final image depends at least as much on my editing skills as it does on my camera skills and I continuously strive to use a combination of the finest cameras, lenses, and lighting, as well as the finest software and all the experience with these that I can bring to bear, to push the limits of what can be created in the field of photographic arts. I take between 35,000 and 50,000 photos per year on average and continue to find new challenges and exciting photogenic opportunities. Let’s explore some of those possibilities together!
