Proms and Portraits

Whether it's senior picture time or prom season or just a good opportunity to create a cherished memento that will become priceless as the years pass, I've never met anyone who regretted having quality portraits done. I strive to capture the beauty in every smile, and create a treasure that will bring joy to everyone who sees it.

Stage and Film Productions

Theater photography requires a particular set of skills which I have developed shooting stills for dozens of plays and concerts. Lighting can often be so intense and variable that it can be particularly challenging. I like to capture movement and light in a way that communicates an active scene, but still maintains a portrait quality.

Festivals, Parties and Events

When photographing festivals and other outdoor events, I enjoy capturing images that tell the story of the event in a fun, documentary style that uses close detail shots, dynamic people shots and wide scenic shots which combine to capture and convey the feel of the whole experience.

What else can I provide?

Cosplay and Historical

I particularly enjoy the unique experience of shooting cosplay and historical reenactments. When creative people make such a strong connection with a character or time period that they want to create and display the costumes and makeup with such precision, I enjoy creating images that extend the illusion of another time and place.

A day in your life

I am available to spend a day with you, your child or another family member to record the various daily activities as seen through my viewfinder, with the same artistic style that I might document a wedding day or family reunion. These images can then be arranged and published in a beautiful custom crafted book that preserves memories of soccer practice, music lessons, judo or karate, art or ballet, play time at the park or in the yard captures the interests, passions and personalities of your loved ones in a uniquely beautiful way. These books become the most priceless treasures and bring joy to generations.

Let me share my photographic knowledge with you

Photography is one of the fastest growing hobbies in America. The availability of high quality camera gear at a reasonable price has caused many to begin expressing their creativity through this rewarding visual art. I occasionally lead one day scenic photography workshops to some of my favorite locations within 3 hours of Monterey, like San Francisco, Yosemite, Moro Bay, Big Sur, Pt Reyes National Seashore, and even some of my favorite locations right here in the Monterey area like The missions, Santa Cruz, Pt Lobos State Park, Pinnacles National park and others. I share my favorite photographic subjects, and teach skills and techniques to help you take your images to the next level. I can usually help you get the most from your equipment. Come shoot with me and let's share our passion for all things photographic.

Who I am

I’m that guy who takes his camera everywhere. I have seen much of my life through a viewfinder since I was 19 years old and bought my first serious 35mm camera as I was leaving to live in Italy for 2 years. In Verona I was befriended by Doug Boyd, a talented photographer who introduced me to the whole idea of creative photography and taught me the basic skills that would set me off on a lifelong love of all things photographic. Since then I’ve spent over 40 years developing those skills and my passion for photography has continued to grow. I especially love a challenge and find joy in shooting in difficult lighting situations or in showing someone who doesn’t feel they are photogenic, that their real beauty can be captured in a professional quality portrait. Thanks for giving me a chance to try.

About WHat I Do

I’m a professional photographer based in the Monterey Bay area along the central coast of California. My photographic experience covers a broad range from photo-journalism to scenic and nature photography, to weddings and portraiture, to commercial work and beyond. If I had a specialty, it would probably be street and travel photography. I enjoy the variety and the freedom of shooting colorful, interesting or unusual and unexpected elements that catch my interest and which, along with shots of the people and animals that accompany the architecture and natural beauty of wherever I am, I like to combine these elements to capture the overall feel and sense of a place or event. I enjoy the challenge there is in candid, unscripted photography, of capturing the fleeting moments, in freezing time for many generations to come. I particularly enjoy shooting for motion picture productions, theater, historical and cosplay settings where I can create images that feel like they come from a different time and place that people don’t see every day.

Much of my work over the past 40 years has been shooting classic weddings, prom and senior photos, and family and individual portraits. Even with these, I prefer to shoot on location rather than the studio, with natural morning or evening light, and to incorporate a more natural, casual, less posed or almost candid sort of setting. I believe that if people are comfortable and at ease, a bit more of my subject’s personality is likely to show through and those photos will convey a sense of the fun and joy we felt in making them.

I’ve spent countless hours in the darkroom crafting quality images from thousands of rolls of film. I felt nearly as much satisfaction in the creative printing process as I did in the capturing of the image. I began using digital cameras in 2000 and now feel I have been able to expand the possibilities of my art tremendously as I perfect my creative skills with Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom. The quality of the final image depends at least as much on my editing skills as it does on my camera skills and I continuously strive to use a combination of the finest cameras, lenses, and lighting, as well as the finest software and all the experience with these that I can bring to bear, to push the limits of what can be created in the field of photographic arts. I take between 35,000 and 50,000 photos per year on average and continue to find new challenges and exciting photogenic opportunities. Let’s explore some of those possibilities together!
